**明治8年、壱岐印通寺の豪商に生まれ、
福沢諭吉の「学問のすすめ」に感銘を受ける。
若くして石炭商として活躍。
34歳で福博電気軌道を設立。
現在の九州電力、西部ガスの前身となる会社を生んだ。
エネルギー界の「鬼」と称され、
戦後は電力会社の全国9分割をGHQに承諾させた。
その一方、晩年は茶道をこよなく愛した。
